    Disaster Preparedness

I didn't know where to post this one.  It is now hurricane season in Florida.  There is always lots of information available on how to prepare your family(human)and property. Food and water requirements are a hot topic. However, no one ever discusses water requirements for dogs. After doing some research, it seems that 2-3 times the amount of food consumed should be the requirement for water. Keeping it simple, if your dog eats 8 ounces of food per day, he needs 16-24 ounces of water. Also, having a 3 day supply of food(at least...2 weeks is more like it) is essential. Home cooking after a hurricane may not be practical, so, I decided on The Honest Kitchen's Force dehydrated dog food as my emergency supply. The water needed to rehydrate can be warmed in the sun, and it is easy to store, and has a long shelf life. The company was very helpful in providing info to chose the best formula to use in a disaster. Also, it is important to keep your pet's vaccination record on hand, as well as current photos that can be used to ID your pet if he is lost. Favorite toys, foods, treats, beds, and blankets are important to have as well. After a disaster, be sure to keep your pet on a leash until you are sure that the environment is safe. A crate is a good item to have on hand. Also, several vets in my area offer "hurricane discounts" on microchipping. Having you pet chipped, and keeping your contact info up to date is vital. In today's world of natural and man made disasters, we have to prepare for the worst. No one wants to repeat the horrors of New Orleans after Katrina. Please, be prepared.
