Re: Urinary Tract Disease in Cats

On May 19 I took my cat Beauty to the vet because she suddenly appeared to be very sick. My vet had a substitue dr. in at the time and she said she told me I had no choice but to leave her and it was kidney failure, high temp and needed to be left for at least three days and they needed to take a blood test. Had I known they would put intravenous thru the vein in her neck (all taped up) I would never have considered it. I took her home after the three days because they told me I would have to put fluids under the skin when I took her home. I knew I could never do that and I should have taken her home with antibiotic, instead of the trauma she was put thru. I still do not know what happened to her nose because a huge scab came off and her nose was pure blood as if a slice was taken off. They told me she might have done it on the cage which was impossible. last year I took in two urine samples which were very bloody looking and both times was told it is just concentrated and to give her vit C. Cats are not like dogs and pretty impossible to medicate. She was happy to be home and got a little of her appetite back, she is normally a poor eater and very slim.. She was on Clavamox. Yesterday she started to meow and kept squatting. Once I saw a drop of what appeared again to me to be bloody urine but what alarmed me more was that I found a tiny piece of jelly like blood. I have seen this before when I took her urine in last year and now and then since she came home. She started to calm down after one day and ate last night and some today. I have been putting a tablet of utica urens in her water, Could it be cystitus? sand in her urine? should I put her back on antibiotic. I do not want to traumatize her again and I refuse to leave her for anything invasive. I plan on calling the dr. who took care of her when she is in but I don't know how to explain it. Has anyone had anything like this before? I don't believe it is her kidney. She doesn't drink excessively nor urinate that much. Has anyone got any advice to offer or similar experience?

Re: Urinary Tract Disease in Cats

    Dorothy,

I had a similar problem recently with one of my cats. He urinated all over my basement carpet and strained to urinate in the litter box. I had to take him to the hospital twice for this problem. Here are the things I have done that have worked: 1). Feed Wellness canned food (my vet says that magnesium causes this problem and Wellness has the lowest amount of it) Feed mainly wet food and decrease or eliminate dry food/treats; 2) Add fresh water to all of your cat's dry/canned food. I have started adding water to all my cats' food. 3) Stay away from fish, 4) Buy "Tract Ease", an herbal product sold at Only Natural Pet. I put it in the wet food; 5) I add blueberry or cranberry concentrate that you can buy at a health food store, but there are also products you can buy from Only Natural Pet that contain these. Cranberry is good for the urinary tract.

My cat has had no problems since I have done these things. My vet says that once cats have this problem, it usually recurs, but so far so good.

Good luck!!! I know what you're going through!

Re: Urinary Tract Disease in Cats

Phyllis, Thank you so much for responding. I really appreciate it. I have been trying to decide what to buy from Natural Pet and will try Track Ease . The problem is she is a very poor eater to begin with, so I can't put it in food. I had been giving her baby food but today she refused everything and didn't touch much yesterday. She does not look so good I feel so worried. She also seems to be constipated. She just licked a little of the baby food and then spit it up. I had three cats sick at the same time and have unfinished clavamox I could give her., She always liked dry food and tuna. I tried every brand after the recall last year (lost two cats last year from tainted science diet) The cats don't like anything. I have been going back to fancy feast some friskies (they were never recalled and didn't use menu foods facility) but I knew for a very long time that commercial food is garbage. I buy cooked chickens, organic raw chopmeat, merricks they don't like any of it, wellness they don't like, paul neuman they don't like. I give up. I throw most of the food away but she is the absolute worst so I don't know how I am going to help her. I am so sick with worry. I will try the health food store tomorrow for the concentrated cranberry and try giving it to her with a dropper. Just ran out today and picked up pet promise and natural balance and organix. Nobody wanted it. Have you ever read Dr. Pitcairns book? The title is Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. He has recipes in there also and another book The Nature of animal Healing by Dr. Martin Goldstein. I read a lot and buy everything but cats are so difficult to medicate. Thank you again and I sure could use your good luck wishes.

Re: Urinary Tract Disease in Cats

    Hi again Dorothy,

Yes, I have all of the natural pet care books. One you may not have heard of is Food Pets Die For. by Ann Martin. After reading this book, I threw away all of the "garbage" food that I had fed my cats. You have to read this book!!! Don't buy anything that Only Natural Pet doesn't sell!!!! Everything else is poison and will kill your cat.

Try the "Tract Ease" and also the herbal product for constipation ("Lax" something; it looks just like the Tract Ease) Both of these solved my cats' urinary and constipation problems. There is also a good natural product for removing hairballs that comes in a tube.

For your finicky eater, try the Tiki Cat canned food. These are small cans of different kinds of fish that you can add to their regular food. My cats practically jump into the can when I open these. If your cats like fish, they will go crazy over Tiki Cat. I use a little bit mixed in with their other food once a week. For constipation, I comb my cats daily to eliminate hairballs and I also add small amounts of organic flax oil, organic coconut oil, organic olive oil, organic hemp oil, pumpkin or sweet potatoes, and raw bran to their food. I also add the Only Natural brands of probiotics and plant enzymes.

If you call OnlyNaturalPet (toll free), they can also advise you. By the way, they told me NOT to buy Pet Promise. Only Natural Pet researchs everything they sell and they sent me information about Pet Promise. They advised me not to buy it. I had purchased some of this a while ago and stopped buying it after reading the information. I often call Only Natural Pet to ask for advice: they are the best pet supply company on the Internet and I trust them completely.

Recently, all four of my cats got sick at the same time, just like yours did!  They had always been healthy, but as soon as I let them go outside, they got sick. They probably got into pesticides/chemicals or who knows what!  This was around the time that the weather got hot in the spring, so the cats were shedding a lot; I thought the problem might be due to hairballs. They stopped eating, urinated all over my basement rug, became constipated, and were lethargic. It was a nightmare! I made 5 trips to the animal hospital in less than 2 weeks. After spending about $7000 on hospital bills and new flooring, they seem to be okay now. I watch them constantly and don't let them go outside anymore.

It sounds like you need to take your cat to the vet or an animal hospital if you haven't done so already. When a cat stops eating and/or throws up constantly, there is a serious problem. I wouldn't wait.

Here is my email address: parkerpl@verizon.net if you want to email me. Don't forget to call Only Natural Pet for advice.

                                     Good luck!

Re: Urinary Tract Disease in Cats

DO NOT LET YOUR CAT GO WITHOUT EATING!  I don't mean to frighten you, but I learned the hard way.  I adopted a cat who is very sensitive and was very depressed about the transition so she ate very little and I offered her EVERYTHING. I thought she was constipated because she stopped pooping and so I brought her to the vet on Monday, by Friday she was in a specialists Animal Hospital having a feeding tube inserted into her belly.  It was there for five weeks and I had to feed her formula through it around the clock. She's fine now and has a very healthy appetite.

If a cat doesn't eat enough, the liver cannot metabolize the fat that the body is burning and the cat will go into liver failure.  Without forced feeding (a feeding tube) 95% of cats die.

Again, I don't mean to alarm you, but please if your cat is sick and isn't eating properly get it to the vet ASAP! Wishing you the best!

     Please keep us posted.

Re: Urinary Tract Disease in Cats

I would suggest you try one of the recipes in Dr. Pitcairn's book. My Kitties are picky too, but they always seem to go for ground chicken and turkey. And, the recipes are easy.

Otherwise, you could try a canned cat food from a company called Fromm. It's just like tuna or chicken from a can, and the cats love it. Be careful about over feeding fish, though. It can actually cause other health problems.

    Good Luck.

P.S. If using antibiotics, be sure to use them ALL. Recurrant and resistant infections are what happens when you don't use them all up. The bugs don't all die, grow right back when you stop the antibiotics, then develop resistance to the same drug when you use it again.(In otherwords, the antibiotic won't work anymore) This cycle is how SUPERINFECTIONS develop. ALWAYS USE ALL OF THE MEDICINE!
