My groomer friend says that if you trim the nails back a little bit each week (or more) the quick will begin to grow back and you can get them shorter. My dog doesn't do so hot with clipper so I trained him with a dremmel and as long as I have a treat he comes running, will assume the position for manicure and sometimes fall asleep while I am working on those toes. Hope that helps and hope you get other suggestions!

Another option is lots of exercise and long walks. Even better if you walk on a hard surface. My dogs are outside running around so much that they NEVER need their nails trimmed!

Another option is to take them to the local groomer every now and then. Most will trim the nails for free, even if you don't use their other services.
