Re: The Natural Approach to Flea Control

As a holistic dog groomer who owns a holistic grooming salon, I actively educate my clients (and hopeful clients) about the dangers of chemical flea and tick prevention and treatment products. I highly recommend using neem oil shampoos and sprays! Neem oil has been used for hundreds of years as a natural insecticide and moisturizing oil. It is 100% biodegradable and safe for use on mammals. An additional plus to using neem oil products is its safety for use around birds, bees, and earthworms- necessary life for the health of our ecosystems! Also, Sentry makes a squeeze-on product called Natural Defense (I believe Only Natural Pet carries it!) that is much safer than the chemical alternatives. Re: The Natural Approach to Flea Control

I have been reading as much information as I can get my hands on about natural flea and tick prevention. I have eliminated 100% of the fleas from my dog by adding garlic and nutritional yeast to her diet. However, I am still having trouble with ticks. The vet and my friends are making me feel like I am putting her life at risk to not get her on the traditional treatment. Can anyone offer a natural method before I cave to this pressure/guilt? I check her carefully at least twice a day for ticks, so hopefully am removing them in less than 24 hours. For long walks, I sprinkle a powdered mix of rosemary, eucalyptus, and a third herb (temporarily forgot the name). Have not found a tick after the long walks...just the short ones in the neighborhood. Don't know if the herbs are helping or if it's the neighborhood that is infested. I would appreciate any tick specific recommendations. Thank you!

Re: The Natural Approach to Flea Control

I live in South Florida, where it never gets cold enough to kill fleas and ticks. These nasty critters are a HUGE problem. I give brewers yeast and garlic to my Corgis, but am pretty much afraid to stop using the chemical flea and tick products. Even when I do use them, I have found fleas on my dogs. Any suggestions for flea control in an area where infestations can be absolutely horrific?

Re: The Natural Approach to Flea Control

Preventing dog flea infestation is important and it is equally important to do so without solutions that are toxic to you or your pet. Dog fleas are not just annoying, they are dangerous.

Dog fleas do more than bite and suck your dog’s blood; they are capable of transmitting diseases to your dog!

At the height of the flea season, you'll want to protect your dogs, cats and household from the pesky flea. But, don't do so at the expense of the health of your pets. There are better methods other than what mass marketing has conditioned us to reach for.

Use non-toxic natural flea protection solutions. That means no flea powders, sprays, collars, shampoos, and dips that are toxic and harmful to your pet; including the newer products that are given by pill or applied to a spot on the skin. Despite the manufacturers' claims of safety, these solutions do not offer natural flea protection, and many problems, some quite serious, have been observed with these products. Why risk the health of your pet?

Many flea products on the market are not considered natural protection against fleas. Most of these products are in fact dangerous chemicals that you would not think of placing on your own body or your children's. Many people regard their pets as family and we owe it to them not to endanger their health. Dogs and cats entrust their lives to us, their guardians.

Many popularly used products contain ingredients such as carbaryl (Sevin), a nerve-paralyzing chemical that can cause a host of side effects, DDVP (dimethyl dichlorovinyl phosphate), methylcarbamate, rotenone, pyrethrins, and piperonyl butoxide. Piperonyl butoxide is used as a booster in most of the new pyrethrum products. It is associated with liver disorders. DDVP is the chemical found in the majority of plastic flea collars. DDVP numbs an insect's nervous system and, although your dog cannot speak, the chemical can have the same effect on your pet.

Don't bathe your loved pet in chemical insecticides that suds or agents called flea dip.

You can attain natural flea protection without bathing your pet with a chemical flea shampoo that leaves a petrochemical residue on the dog's skin, which is potentially unsafe for the canine and the household. Unlike with a more natural flea protection, when the pet licks itself, it gets an oral dose of a toxic chemical. Spraying or dipping with a residual pesticide to rid your dog of fleas has little or no lasting effect. Flea shampoos often only help get rid of fleas from your dog's fur. If live fleas are in the bath water they can re-infest your pet with a simple splash. Do not allow bath water to accumulate. Regular and proper use of hypoallergenic shampooing and conditioning or a brand name dishwashing liquid will kill fleas on contact and act as a repellent.
You wouldn't put toxic substances on yourself, don’t put them on your pet.

Natural Flea Control Products that are Safe for your Home and Pets! Herbal Flea Collars made with essential oils that smell great but help repel fleas and ticks. Also available, Flea and Tick Squeeze-on Oils that kill fleas, ticks and mosquitoes for up to four weeks, and are safe on pets and around the family. There are Natural Insect Repellent Sprays that rely on essential oils to keep away insects without the use of DEET, as well as Natural  Powders that safely eliminate fleas on your pets and in your home. There is also Diatomaceous Earth to put in the arsenal against fleas and ticks. The USDA studied diatomaceous earth from 1963-1970 and found it more effective than malathion in protecting grain storage as a means of natural, poison-free insect control. The EPA approved and registered diatomaceous earth for use against indoor and outdoor crawling insects. Diatomaceous earth is a natural, non-chemical product consisting of broken up shells of tiny critters, called diatoms, which lived long ago and died in groups so massive that they are mined. Diatomaceous earth controls pests by physical, not chemical, action. It punctures an insect’s exoskeleton and absorbs its body fluids—thus posing no harm to warm-blooded life.

Pests cannot develop immunity to DE, as they do to most synthetic chemical treatments you purchase at the store. Perfectly safe for skin contact, diatomaceous earth, as well as borates, is a long-term residual organic insecticide treatment to protect you, your pets and livestock from fleas and ticks. Diatomaceous earth can be used almost anywhere around the home, yard or animal housing.
Rubbed lightly onto a dog, cat, gerbil or even bird it is very effective in the ridding of fleas, ticks, lice, and microscopic red mites that attack the legs of pet birds and other pests around the premises.

The healthier your pet is, the less attractive it is to fleas.

The absolute best natural flea protection solution is to reduce your pet’s susceptibility to fleas by improving its health. The healthier your pet is, the less attractive it is to fleas. Parasites and fleas in particular are attracted to weak, unhealthy or young animals whose immune system is not functioning well. The quality of nutrition is a major factor in achieving natural flea protection.

There is ample research showing that fatty acid supplements, in the ideal dietary ratio of 5:1 of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids, can be beneficial in pets with atopic dermatitis and flea allergy problems. These supplements are also advocated in cases of kidney disease, elevated cholesterol and arthritis. They are derived from fish oils of coldwater fish such as salmon and trout. Veterinarians are discovering that fatty acids can be valuable for a variety of conditions. Fatty acids are supplied in liquid and capsule form, and are readily available.

    The very best of luck!
