Sentry Natural Defense Squeeze On for Cats & Kittens

I would like to know if anyone else had a bad experience with this product?

I used this product on my cat towards the beginning on October.  A couple of weeks later my cat had to be admitted into the hospital because she was not eating, using the bathroom, and could barely walk.  Her blood levels were all high and toxicity was suspected.  I got a call yesterday that she passed away from acute renal failure, which is very rare in cats her age.  This downward spiral all happened after applying this product.  I want to know if anyone else had a negative experience.

I am truely sorry for your loss, but, I am also intrigued. You say the kitty's blood levels were all high. Which ones? There are many. Also, the term "toxicity" is very vague. There are many forms of "toxic" reactions. The ingredients of the substance in question seem pretty benign. As a nurse, I know that on occasion, there is SOME systemic absorption of topically applied medicines, but, it is usually insignificant, not enough to cause any problems to the client. Is it possible that kitty got into something she shouldn't have? Was she an outdoor kitty? If so, it is entirely possible that she ingested something that made her ill, and it happened to be around the same time you applied the flea control. Antifreeze is a common compound that causes renal failure in animals. A leaky vehicle with a puddle underneath it is very tempting to animals, as the antifreeze has a sweet taste. Many dogs and cats die each year after ingesting antifreeze.  Lemongrass, cloves, and peppermint are all common ingredients in everyday food items. It is highly unlikely that that is what made your baby sick.

I do hope you are able to find some answers.

Once again, I am sorry for your loss and wish you peace.

Thank you for your response.  I truly wish it WAS something else because the amount of guilt I feel for using this product is unbelieveable!  However, I honestly feel this product caused her health to fail.  She was never hospitalized before, she is approximately 5 years old and an indoor cat.  It can't be a coincidence that not even 3 weeks after I applied this product she died of complications she never had before.  I'd also like to refer you to the product reviews left on this website. I have pictures of the area where I applied it where her fur fell off and the area was completely burnt.  This just goes to show how powerful these chemicals were, however natural.

I have had fur fall out from the areas where I applied flea control on my cats as well. That's why they tell you to use a small amount as a "test dose" first.

You are correct  that most of the reviews on this product are not very favorable---the product doesn't work. That said, it is still unlikely that peppermint oil, cloves, and lemongrass killed your beloved kitty.

You must look at EVERYTHING in your household. Commercial pest control is very toxic to pets. Cleaning agents, laundry detergents, hair spray, the food you feed your pets. What did kitty eat? Was it commercial pet food? There are a few books to look at regarding that issue. Ann Martin has written "Food Pets Die For", and it is eye opening. I was feeding high-end commercial dog food to my dogs, only to find out that it contained contaminated ingredients, and that there was virtually no way of knowing for sure what REALLY went into that bag of dog food. Most pet food manufacturers have a "co-manufacturer" that makes the food. There is little or no communication between the two. When I discovered I had been feeding contaminated food to my pets, the manufacturer blamed it on the co-manufacturer, stating thay had added an extra ingedient the the primary manufacturer was not aware of. That ingredient was not even listed on the label.

You must look at EVERYTHING. The August/September issue of Animal Wellness Magazine had a list of common toxic to pets chemicals that almost all of us have in our homes. Check it out and see what you think.

Thank you for the resources I will look into them.  I am going to have this situation investigated further and I have already reported it to several state and government agencies.  Although I can't rule it out, I seriously doubt it was the food I had been giving her or any cleaning products I had used because I have been using the same types of food and products since I got her.  Thank you again for your care and concern.  But at this time, there is just too much of a connection between the time this product was applied and the time of her acute renal failure and death.

I would just advise people to be weary of this product and consult your vet before using ANY over-the-counter flea/tick product.  If you do a search online, you will see that there have been hundreds of negative incidents with OTC flea/tick products.  I just wish I was a more knowledgable consumer before I applied this product to her.

I believe that the product you chose was the least toxic in a line of commercial insecticides for flea control. There are many that are far worse.  Something happened that you are not yet aware of. Perhaps you will consider a necropsy  to help you figure out what happened. I wish you the best of peace and luck in you endevour.

I wish all the best for you.
