Lymphedema - 6 week old German Shepherd

     Hi all,

Out of a "oops" litter of 8 German Shepherds, one male was born with an slightly oversized rear leg.

He is now 6 weeks+ and both front legs and one rear leg swell during the day. The other rear leg presents normally.

He was seen by my vet last night and the vet thought maybe heart, but his heart is strong and pulse is good.

She researched and said he has hereditary lymphedema.  And the only thing we can do is give him Vitamin P (Rutin).

He is in no pain but will swell all his life, and more than likely not live to be an elderly dog.

I've been researching this condition on the Net, primarily the condition in Humans. There are several holistic treatments that seem to help control the swelling.

Has anyone ever tried them on a dog? Dandelion Root Extract is said to help due to it's natural diueritic effect, and there are no side effects.

There is also Horsechestnut Herb and Burdock/Red Root Compund. Then there is "Inflamzyme Forte" and "Lymphotend".

I have emailed my vet to run this past them. Just wondering if anyoneout there has any experience with lymphedema?

Skin that is swollen due to lymphedema is susceptible to bacterial infection and delayed healing after injury, it is important that any break in the skin receives prompt and appropriate first aid treatment. Antibiotics could be necessary for and to prevent secondary infections, otherwise your dog will be generally healthy.

Warm water massage can help because the lymph system has no inner pump mechanism like the heart does.  Lymph flow is stimulated specifically through muscle action that "pushes" the fluid through the lymphatics, and compression bandaging can help in minimizing the symptoms.

Flavonoids which are water soluble versus oil soluble as the carotenes are, have demonstrated antioxidant properties and as such may assist the body in eliminating radical free agents thus helping the lymph system. Interestingly these substances were discovered by the same person who discovered vitamin C, Nobel laureate Albert Szent-Gyorgi, Ph.D.,

You can read about an experimental surgery at this unbelievably long link that follows. http://www.springerlink.com/content/lj8620212012h3w8/

We are all rooting for you having a positive out come

    All the best

Re: Lymphedema - 6 week old German Shepherd

Jay is right. Extremities swollen due to lymphedema are quite suspect to infection. The skin should be inspected daily, and antibiotics started if any wounds are found. My experience with lymphedema is mostly with *** cancer patients. Gentle compression and exercise may be helpful. Perhaps if you can get the little one comfortable with being on his back, you could gently massage his legs, moving from his feet and toward his body, helping to push fluid back into general circulation. You could also possibly try applying Co-flex as a gentle wrap to his legs, helping to keep edema down. You would definately want to remove the bandages a few times a day to assess the skin.

Sometimes gentle diuresis can help, using a drug that will spare the body's electrolytes. Electrolyte sparing drugs take longer to work, but you don't have the danger of depleting precious minerals like potassium, which are needed for proper muscle and cardiac funtion.

Also, if you don't mind a little foot work, most local hospitals have a cancer center that works with a lymphedema treatment center. A therapist in such a center may have some helpful tips. If you are in a major metropolitan area, there may even be a vet center that performs physical therapy for dogs. A therapist there could probably teach you certain message and treatment techniques that may help.

Most of all, don't give up. We know that you want to do your best for your little one, because you have accessed this website. Do your best, and you will make the little one comfortable for as long as you can.

Good luck, and let us know how things go.

Re: Lymphedema - 6 week old German Shepherd

    Hi all,

    Thanks for all the help!

An update on Merrick... We started massaging his legs every night, pushing upwards. (He has decided that he's special now, and has figured out how to climb up on the couch so he can sit in your lap, get rubbed, and I swear he's laughing at the other pups on the floor!) Wink

The first few days we really didn't notice much of a difference (other than he's now "spoiled"). But yesterday, his rear leg had lost that bulginess around the hock and you could see his knees on his front legs for the first time. So looks like the massaging is doing the little guy good. And his face has lost that puffy look around his eyes and nose area. I'll post some pics tonight.

My vet wants me to use the vitamin Rutin (250 mg one a day), along with Lymphotend drops (my idea and doesn't think it would hurt to try).  I have been unable to locate just Rutin by itself. Vitamin stores in the area have told me Rutin is a trace element, and they have never seen it other than as an ingredient with other vitamins (mostly Vit C).

I am in contact with American Biologics (I have a pet supply business so I can order direct) that make the Lymphotend. They also make the Inflamzyme Forte which contains Rutin as the 8th ingredient. They recommend these products be used together. I have emailed my vet and am waiting on a reply. The Inflamzyme Forte comes in a capsule or a powder. Since he's still "little" at 10 lbs, the powder would probably be easier to give him at first. I'm good at sticking a pill down an adult dog's throat but a pup? Yikes! Confused

    Julie,

What wonderful news! So happy that little Merrick is doing better!. Get him started on Lymphotend and Inflamzyme along with massage, and who knows? He'll do great. Besides, somebody in the litter has to be spoiled. He'll probably end up the alpha!

Can't wait to see the pics!

It is amazing what massage can do. In conjuction with medication you should see a vast improvement. I can't wait to start my massage schooling to learn more about lymph drainage and the like. Good luck and keep us posted please!!

    German Shepherd Pup - Lymphedema

    Hi all!

Good news! The holistic meds are working!! He's been on them for only 2 days and the edema has definetely lessened.

At first I thought it was wishful thinking, but his rear leg is much better. And you can tell Merrick feels better. His legs must weigh less, as he runs more than he did before. And he's much more fiesty! LOL!

I am kicking myself for not taking "before" pics... These are pics from when he was 5 weeks, before the Inf-Zyme and Lymphotend. In the 2nd pic, you can see how big his front feet are compared to the blue pup in the middle. I'll post some tonight that are more recent.

Re: Lymphedema - 6 week old German Shepherd

When my dog has a skin infection I have a mix of drapalene (baby cream) with tea tree oil and lavender oil. two teaspoons of drapalene to ten drops of tea tree and lavender oil. It clears most things up including cuts.

I have lymphodema and one day Id run out of my E45 cream I use every night on my legs and my dogs cream was handy so I used that to my complete surprise in the morning my lymphodema had improoved about 50%. Either way its worth a try before you start using antibiotics for some unknown reason some antibiotics seem to make the celulisis you get when the legs are infected worse so the above mix helps stop that.

My dogs a poodle and he has very sensitive skin so this mix should be perfectly O.K. for your puppy. It also doesnt do him any harm when he tries to lick it off which funnily enough he doesnt even bother to do now

I would LOVE to try this on him.... But how do I find Drapalene in the United States? Is there another name for it here?

I have searched the Internet and all I come up with is UK stores.

     Is there an US alternative??

You could use any baby cream. But make sure the tea tree oil and or the lavender oil is pure

    Re: Lymphedema - German Shepherd

Hi All! Thanks for the prayers, I think they are working!

    Merrick is doing good!

The fluid has reduced to half of what it was in his rear leg, there is no longer a pocket of fluid on the rear of his hock.
He almost walks normally now, before he would swing the swollen leg out out and in as he moved.

His face is not nearly so puffed.

His front feet seem to be the worst. Some days they swell more than others. Other days they are not so bad.
The important thing is they do not seem to be getting worse.

I'll post some pics of the silly guy tonight. He's 3 months old today! Cake

    Julie, That is just terrific!

That is the kind of news that will brighten a day. Keep up those massages and it will of course make Merrick feel like the special dog that he is.
